Engineer in Simulator Development
VTI, the Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute, is an agency conducting applied research and qualified investigations in the transport sector. We have approximately 250 employees and an annual turnover of around 300 million SEK. The head office is located in Linköping, while other offices are in Stockholm, Gothenburg, and Lund.
We are now looking for an additional employee for the Vehicle Systems and Driving Simulation unit, FSK. The unit conducts leading research in vehicle systems, vehicle technology, and simulation. Applications exist across all modes of transport and often focus on technology development in electrification, autonomy, digitalization, and the transition to a sustainable transport system. Much of the work is done in collaboration with other units and external partners, often linked to behavioral science questions or research related to environmental and energy issues. The unit develops and operates part of VTI's important research equipment; advanced driving simulators, VR/XR labs, and equipment for measuring road and tire interaction. Much of the software for this equipment is developed in-house, which constitutes a large part of the operation. The unit has about 20 employees and is located in Linköping, Gothenburg, and Lund.
The position is based in Linköping.
About the Role
Your main task will be to work as an engineer in simulator development with a focus on software, model integration, and the integration and control of physical systems, electronics, and components. You will work in a creative organization with short decision-making paths where you contribute technical depth in one or more areas but also have a willingness, curiosity, and ability to work broadly and applicably to make the whole function. You will be an important part of the team and have close collaboration with colleagues in Linköping and Gothenburg as well as with external partners.
Key Responsibilities Include:
- Software development of simulator applications, primarily driving simulators across several modes of transport, such as vehicle or train simulators with the driver in the loop.
- Participate in simulator-related research and development projects both nationally and internationally, for example by systematizing and developing new features, scenarios, or visual environments based on the needs of each project and providing technical expertise during simulator trials.
- Work with and be responsible for the maintenance and operation of simulators and other research infrastructure.
- Participate in specification, procurement, integration, and testing of new research equipment for simulators and VR/XR labs.
- Contribute to VTI's interdisciplinary environment, maintain contact with our partners, and be active in creating new contacts and participating in networks.
About You
You are a graduate engineer in software development, computer engineering, or another equivalent educational background. Experience in train simulation development, C++ programming of Unreal Engine plugins is highly meritorious. If you have practical experience in Continuous Integration, DevOps, and workflows for build processes and automated testing, that is welcome. Additional examples of experiences that are meritorious include:
- Teamwork in system and software development projects in a research environment, including coordination with internal and external stakeholders.
- Automated generation of road and track descriptions according to the OpenDrive standard or similar.
- Development and use of VR/XR applications.
- Experience acting as a test leader in simulator or field studies.
You will have many contacts with internal and external clients, test subjects, partners, and researchers. Therefore, we place great importance on your ability to collaborate and communicate in various team compositions, but also on your ability to take initiative and work independently. You are solution-oriented and ready to help where needed in the unit's work. You express yourself very well in both spoken and written Swedish and English. We place great importance on your personal qualities.
